Mission Statement

“The mission of The College of Wooster Art Museum is to provide education about the diversity of visual expression within a pluralistic contemporary culture, and to connect art to all kinds of human experiences within a social and historical context.”

The COWAM is part of the public programs offered by the College to the City of Wooster and Wayne County. In keeping with the College's strategic plan, the COWAM “aims to establish an atmosphere in which intellectual inquiry is unconstrained by ideology, fashion, or creed, and where ideas are tested through critical discourse in a diverse community,” and “educational and cultural resources are made available to those from outside the institution.” Through exhibitions, documentation, and free lectures, the COWAM's public programming strengthens the public value of the arts in Northeast Ohio.

In ever-expanding circles, the COWAM serves the students, faculty, and staff at The College of Wooster, the residents of the City of Wooster and Wayne County, and the state of Ohio and surrounding region.

In the early 1980s the COWAM’s mission was expanded to highlight the presentation of work by women and minority artists who generally had not received the recognition they deserved. Building upon this history, the COWAM strives to find new ways of exploring the complexity of a multifaceted society through the visual arts.
